The Selva Piranha Sail 9.9HP Extra Long Shaft is a purpose-built auxiliary outboard for sailboats, combining Selva’s legendary lightness with robust propulsion and precision control. Powered by a 181 cc single-cylinder 4-stroke SOHC engine, it delivers strong, reliable torque at low rpm, perfect for docking, manoeuvring, or maintaining course in calm conditions. Its Extra Long Shaft (XL) design keeps the propeller deeply submerged, ensuring consistent thrust even when the vessel heels or pitches, while the Big-Foot gearcase supports a larger propeller for superior bite and efficiency. Quiet, fuel-efficient, and weighing just around 31 kg, the Piranha Sail is the perfect companion for cruising yachts and sailing schools that demand dependable, economical auxiliary power.

Product Description

At its core, the Piranha Sail 9.9HP uses a high-efficiency 181 cc single-cylinder 4-stroke engine optimised for torque delivery at lower speeds. The overhead-camshaft configuration ensures precise valve timing and reduced mechanical friction, allowing smooth, linear power across the 5 500–6 000 rpm range. Its tuned intake and exhaust system improve combustion efficiency, while the large propeller diameter delivers more thrust per revolution—ideal for moving displacement hulls with minimal noise or vibration. The result is a remarkably efficient outboard that maintains steady push while sipping fuel, extending range and reducing emissions.

Built with Selva’s trademark precision, the Piranha Sail is compact yet exceptionally tough. The Extra Long Shaft provides deep propeller immersion for greater stability and smoother tracking, particularly on sailboats with higher freeboards. The reinforced Big Foot gearcase features a 13 : 25 ratio to convert torque into usable thrust with maximum grip. A sealed, pump-forced water-cooling system maintains constant operating temperature, while multi-layer marine coatings protect against corrosion in saltwater. Its light aluminium block and robust mounts absorb vibration without compromising strength, making it reliable for daily use in demanding coastal environments.

Starting is effortless through Selva’s recoil-assist system, and operation remains whisper-quiet thanks to its balanced crankshaft and insulated mountings. The twist-grip tiller provides precise throttle control for fine-tuned manoeuvring under sail or while entering tight marinas. The five-position manual trim allows users to adjust running angle for optimum propeller efficiency or shallow-water operation. Maintenance access is straightforward—oil, spark plug, and impeller checks can all be done without removing the cowl. Compact, light, and remarkably stable, the Piranha Sail 9.9 HP XL provides the comfort and confidence sailors expect from a trusted auxiliary engine.
