MD Andy Burgess started as the "Saturday Boy" over 20 years ago. On leaving University with an honours degree in mathematics he took pity on Rob and went full time. Headhunted by Sowester/Simpson Lawrence, the largest marine equipment distributor of its day, he was on the road (60,000 + miles per year!) for 6 years as Northern area sales manager. This, coupled with his behind the counter years working alongside Rob since rejoining Storrar Marine, has given him an unrivalled knowledge of the retail trade. Andy comes from a successful competitive sailing background with success at National and International level in both dinghies & yachts. Long hours at work and a growing young family means Andy struggles to sail much in the summer however in the winter months he can be found sports boat racing most weekends.
Rob Storrar, a sailmaker by trade, first opened for business over 35 years ago. Frustrated with the lack of a good local chandlery, he began stocking a limited range of marine equipment. As demand grew he pioneered the now familiar concept of the one-stop chandlery/sailmaking/spar & rigging outlet. To this day his overriding commitment continues to be to quality, choice, first class service & specialist knowledge.
As a past National champion in a variety of dinghy classes, he has a wealth of practical experience both in sailing and fitting out boats. His skills have been recognised internationally and as a result he has supplied boats and equipment worldwide. His "big boat" experience is second to none having in the past purchased a bare shell and fitted it out from scratch including installing the engine and all associated running gear, manufactured the sails, covers, upholstery and rigged the mast.
If you phone for technical advice, your 1st point of call will probably be Andy Laurence. With over 30 years of sailing experience as well as 10 years fitting out boats, and specialising in epoxy and osmosis repair, if he doesn't know it then it's probably not worth knowing!
