Big news for commercial fishermen: the government's Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FaSS) has been expanded to help pay for new engines and gearboxes, and that includes new outboards.
Until now, engine replacements weren't covered by the scheme. From 15 September 2026 that changed, and fishing businesses across England can apply for a grant towards the cost of re-powering their vessel.
How much could you get?
The grant covers a percentage of the cost of a new engine, depending on your vessel and the type of engine:
- 65% for the Small Scale Coastal Fleet (vessels under 12m that don't use towed gear) fitting a new petrol or diesel engine
- 50% for all other vessels fitting a new petrol or diesel engine
- 90% for electric or hybrid engines, whatever the size of your vessel or business
For many inshore boats that means a brand-new petrol outboard could cost you around a third of the normal price.
Why is the government doing this?
The aim is to help the fishing fleet modernise, run more efficiently and cut engine emissions. The scheme is run by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) on behalf of Defra, and is paid for from the Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund. Over £5 million has already been approved for projects since the scheme reopened in April.
Who can apply?
The scheme covers England, and is open to individuals and businesses directly involved in commercial sea fishing, as well as aquaculture, seafood processing and marine conservation. You'll need to be able to show a clear benefit to the fishing and seafood sector in England.
Things to know before you apply
- Don't buy first. Anything purchased before the MMO has acknowledged your application isn't eligible, so get your application in before you order.
- You'll need a quote. The engine, supplier and price on your application must match what you eventually buy, so it's worth getting an accurate quote up front.
- You pay, then claim back. Successful applicants pay for the project up front and then claim the grant back from the MMO.
- Talk to the MCA. Work on board a vessel needs to meet Maritime and Coastguard Agency standards, and the MMO recommends speaking to them before you apply.
- Expect a decision within about 12 weeks, as long as your application is complete. Incomplete applications take longer.
- Not sure if you qualify? You can submit an optional Expression of Interest first, and the MMO grants team will help first-time applicants.
